How to mock delegate constructors?

Do candidates still use delegate committees today?

  • I am right now reading a book about the 1984 presidential campaign called "Wake Us When It's Over," and I came across a fascinating political element I have never heard of before: the delegate committee. These delegate committees could put members of political organizations on presidential primary ballots that selected the delegates that would be sent to the national conventions. In 1984, several delegate committees were organized, mostly by organized labor, to place delegates on the ballot on behalf of Walter Mondale. The caveat was that the committees had to be independent of the presidential candidate's campaign. Mondale's campaign was low on money, so his campaign exploited the legalese of federal election laws and organized delegate committees to earn PAC contributions. There was a large public outcry over delegate committees in 1984, but not enough to damage Mondale. Do modern presidential campaigns still feature delegate committed like these, and how are they used and managed? Do presidential candidates today rely on them like Mondale did?

  • Answer:

The Democrats still use a similar system, Republicans use it differently.
