Sudden Rash in 3yr old- What is it?
-
During dinner last night my 3 year old daughter suddenly developed a rash. 20 minutes earlier she was fine. Started as rash bumps on cheeks and face spread down torso as small red dots not raised. I thought it might be an allergic reaction to something she ate but she was eating any thing new. She had a bite or two of english muffin and some oven fries w/ olive oil, garlic powder, oregano, salt, pepper and paprika which I make often. I gave her some children's Benedryl. He identical sister had no rash. Later some of the rash in face looked like tiny little blisters. Gave her more Benedryl this morning. No change. Nothing looks blistery now (15hrs after onset) just red bumps on face and fine covering of red dots on her back, next and some arms. She has had all of her immunization shots. My kids had off and on fevers earlier in the week. 2 nights ago she was 102.7 gave her children's ibuprofen and she had been fine since. What could bring on such a sudden rash? I don't really want to take her to the doctor as we have been there WAAAY too much the past few months and chances are it is something that will have to go away on its own anyhow, but if it is contagious then I want be careful where we go what we do.

Answer:
Does your other child now has the same rash? They had really high fevers for about 3 days, 4-5 days ago? And now the rash is just there, is it on her torso, around her diaper area but not on her privates? If so it could be roseolla (child measles) my son had it roughly after he was just 1, we had to stay home with no contact with anyone under the age of 3 because as soon as the rash appears and the fever goes away he was contagious. He picked it up from the park, because I where it as I assumed it was a reaction to my laundry soap and I had a drs app anyways so I had my dr look at him quickly and she told me it was roseolla and to keep him home for 7-10 days until the rash went away. It's not raised, it could be slightly itchy for her? She's acting entirely normal? Call your dr and ask just incase you don't want to take her in public if she could infect other children right and if they think it could be they might have you bring her in and be there right at a certain time and take you right into the exam room to limit what she touches to stop the spread.

Aerianna
There are many good creams out there, creams work better than lotions. We did not do well with aquaphor or Eucerin, though both are highly recommended, and have a good reputation. These have lanolin in it, a wool derivative, which can be irritating for some (my son included). We use Cetaphil cream, its in a tub. Do avoid any that have alcohol as an ingredient, its effect is that it is drying. Calendula is all natural, herbal alternative remedy that does have great healing properties, not just for eczema but for cuts and scrapes too. We use Aveeno baby body wash for the tub. We use All clear laundry detergent. We do have Eladil as a step down from the steroids. My son has mild, moderate, and strong scripts for steroid creams. The humidifier in his room at night will help the dry skin. If he is really itchy, you can give him some benadryl for it, we do this at night, or give the longer acting script of atarax.
