Can I get treatment for gastric ulcers?

How do I get my kittens to stop nursing?

  • The kittens are 16 weeks old and are big bouncy and healthy. The mother cat on the other hand developed indolent ulcers a few weeks ago, lost her appetite and had to given treatment. She got really weak and I've been giving her the best of food and vitamins but she's always been a picky eater. so it doesnt help that the two little maniacs won't let her be! Had her spayed last week and I hoped the milk would dry up, but it didn't work...Ive tried to separate them but they somehow find a way to get to her.

  • Answer:

Kittens probably aren't getting all that much milk at this stage of the came. They like the sucking and closeness to mom. If mom doesn't want to nurse them any more she will let them know. At this point however, since she's mending back to health keep mom separated from her kittens in another room where kittens can't get to her, at least until mom regains her strength. That doesn't mean mom has to be kept in the closed room 24/7. When she is out just keep an eye on the kittens if they try to nurse. Find other things that will interest the kittens and give mom a little space. Try to keep normal routine so mom can eat/drink/use litter box as usual. The bedroom thing could be for certain times of day that you think she needs a little more rest. I'm sure you can work that out.

Are the kittens still just on mothers milk?or are you feeding them too? if not,you need to wean them off the mother by replacing one "meal"of milk a day with something milky like rice pudding, and slowly do it more often with harder food, mixing in small cat food over a couple of weeks until they are completly weaned off.i would suggest that you separate the kittens and mother at this time of day by placing them or her in a different room or outside.once they are weaned off the milk should dry up.

It may take a while but mom usually puts a stop to it. She needs a cat tree where it will be less convenient to get to her. See if you can feed them something they really like and try to interest them in playing more

As long as mom cats let them nurse, they will continue. The kittens are four months old so perhaps the vet will now consider spaying, neutering them because a female kitten can get pregnant at this age. Don't let this happen as pregnancy at this young of age will kill the kitten. You will need to keep mom cat confined to your bedroom or another room so that she can heal properly.
