What's The Best MSM For Horses?

Whats the next step in introducing my dog to horses?

  • i have a horse and work at a yard and recently got a rescue dog. we think he is a collie x staffordshire bull terrier and he's so obedient and good i thought he'd make a great yard dog. he's only ever shown aggression when we first got him with other dogs he was a bit inpatient, but i managed to train him out of this- however i am very conscious that that side to him is there. i thought i'd take him up the yard today to introduce him and thought i'd introduce him to all the smells first. at first he was very alert and all the horses were in his stable and when he saw one he didn't bark, he just looked really alert as if he was trying to figure out what the hell that big thing was! i know my horse is very good with dogs so i allowed them to sniff each other's noses- i was very conscious of my dog as he's still young he can be a bit mouthy but he was a star. i kept him on a lead at first but was very very pleased with how he behaved. a few horses also walked past and he saw one being worked in the school and just watched calmly. do you think i should do this a few more times before allowing him loose around the yard? what steps should i take to make sure there are no problems? he's generally very very obedient with me and he knows who's in charge :)

I would keep him on his leash until you notice he is not alerted at all from the animals. Introduce him to everything possible with horses, even take him in the paddock with a few. It's the worst when you let the dog off the leash and think he's okay, and than he goes in the paddock and tries to herd the horses together resulting in them spooking. I remember once I took my dog to a horse show and he started barking instantly when he saw a horse and it was when they were in the show ring! It was an awful experience for me /: but after some training techniques within 10 mintues he was fine

If the dog is smart, he will stay away from the horses. I brought my dog to the barn for the first time last summer, and led her around on her leash at first. She would sniff the horses at first, but kept her distance. We took her off leash and she minded her own business- she's afraid of the horses, but will still sniff them if i'm near them. The only bad thing she did was when i was lunging my mare, she ran out into the ring to be with me- luckily my horse stopped and didn't run her over! I would make sure to keep a close eye on your dog if he's running loose, my barn owners now deceased stallion actually killed a dog that got in his paddock and put another in the vet's office with serious injuries. And make sure it's okay with other people at the barn for your dog to run around!

Just keep him on a leash at first around the horses (or fowl especially if you have any) for the first couple of weeks, get him close to the horses and as use to them as he can get. To the point when while standing there he will even take a nap hes so comfortable. That's what I did with my dogs and horse and they don't even half to be on a leash after a couple weeks. Just get him as use to the animals as possible. Also, watch the horse as well because if it's not been around dogs theres no tellin how it will act either. horses are also very territorial. My horse had kicked at the dogs before so watch them as well. Good luck!
