When is the best time to apply to CUNY?

CUNY Baruch vs SUNY Binghamton?

  • Hi, all. I got accepted to Baruch and Binghamton. However, I am really sad because schools that I like are all rejected me. So, now it is the decision between Baruch and Bing. I would like to major in Economics and would like to transfer to another school (Ivy league) after sophomore year. If I attend Baruch, I will need to pay about 5000 a year and Bing for like about 20,000 a year. Seriously, I am dying to go to my dream school, but it rejected me. Anyhow, I don't want to give up. My dream school is always the most important thing in my life. Considering transferring to my dream school, which school should I go to? I mean, which school will help me transfer to another easier? Does reputation help in this transfer process? I heard not all schools accept CUNY's credit, is that true?Thank you. P.S. I think the major reason those top 20 schools rejected me is that my SAT is really low. Despite I have decent GPA and high class-rank, I think my SAT score really hurts me badly. I will retake it for sure. And also, anyone has any suggestion toward transfer? I really appreciate your answer and time. Thank you!

  • Answer:

CUNY Baruch is just fine. I have never heard of any university anywhere in the world declining to accept CUNY credits for satisfactorily completed coursework that has an equivalent at the receiving university. Just get good grades in legitimate courses [nothing with the word "studies" in it; nothing too trendy with titles such as Womyn or Gender and you ought to be okay. I cannot offer you much hope for transferring to any of the Ivies. It just doesn't happen that often.

Baruch is a very competitive school and has one of the lowest acceptances rates for public universities in the country. West Point is the only public university with a lower acceptance rate. In other words, I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to attend Baruch if they have offered. And since it hosts the flagship business school of the CUNY system, the Zicklin School of Business, it's ideal for Econ. Keep in mind though, the business school is so prestigious that acceptance to Baruch does not automatically mean acceptance to Zicklin. In fact, you can't even apply to Zicklin until you first complete 45 credits, including a number of pre-business courses like Economics, Accounting and Statistics.
