What can I do to get into a good specialized high school like Brooklyn Tech?
-
Hi, I'm a seventh grader and as of now, I really do want to get into Brooklyn Tech. I don't think I could go into Stuyvesant because you need very high scores to get in there, but I want to try to get a very high score on the SHSAT for Brooklyn Tech. Also, what scores do you have to get to be able to get into Brooklyn Tech and I want to know if there is anything useful that will help me get a good score on my SHSAT?

Answer:
To give you and idea of the test, take a look at this link. It has two practice tests in it: http://schools.nyc.gov/NR/rdonlyres/1E788197-6B42-4BF1-BBA4-1A3A2686C398/0/SHSAT_StdntHndbk_Web_v2.pdf Then in June get the 2012 version from your guidance counselor. After that, you may want to buy study books. First, take a look at the Kaplan book (easiest of the three, the other two being Princeton Review and Barrons). All books are available at Barnes and Noble. The Barrons book is the hardest of the three, and you may want to save it for last. I bought my Barron's book for $10 from Amazon. Each book has different strengths. The latest you should start practicing is Summer 2012. Many students start earlier. If you gets distracted easily or think you may do better with outside group prep, there's Kaplan, Princeton Review, GRF, Naomi Bushman (downtown) to name a few. Plan on spending about $900 or more for these programs. Also, see if your school offers free prep and take advantage if it does. Last, on your own, you can read more, especially non-fiction. This will help you with the verbal section of the SHSAT.
