Should I go back to school or have a baby?
-
I've really been thinking about going back to school lately. I'm 26, and already have a BA in Sociology, as well as a BSW and I have been working for children's services for the last 3 years. The thing is, I have started to think that perhaps I don't want to be a social worker long term. I signed up for an LSAT preparation course for the summer, as I am thinking of applying into law schools for the 2013-14 year, as ultimately I think I'd like to get a JD with a focus in public interest. So here's my dilemma: my husband and I have been married a little over 2 years now, and own our own home. He recently celebrated his 30th birthday, and somehow caught the baby bug, and I have to admit, it's crossed my mind a lot recently too. He's started bringing home baby things for our empty bedroom. A few months ago, we stopped preventing pregnancy, but haven't actively been trying to conceive either. I just don't know what I want to do - go back to school now, baby later or baby now, maybe school later. Going to school now would men putting off having a baby for at least four more years; the year between now and school, 2 year JD degree, 10 months of articling, and then am I really going to want to put my new career on hold to then have a baby? My husband took the "it's your career on the line, not mine, so I will respect your decision either way" approach. My husband is a geophysicist so money isn't a big concern in the decision. "Just" my career. Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
Ultimately, I definitely think is a decision that has to come from what you feel you need more. My only input is that there is a time window, so to speak, on having a baby. There is not one on going back to school.

Sounds like you already have a great career. Have a baby. You'll have forever to go to school.

you can always pick up your career at any point. i done things the other way round i had my kids young and always took on rubbish part time work to keep the money coming in as my partner works in the building trade and jobs are hit and miss. my youngest started school in september so i have decided to start building a career for myself as opposed to just getting by, i now do voluntary work for probation and i am hoping to get a job as a trainee probation officer when they start recruiting at the end of this year, you have an advantage as you have already established your career and could easily take time out to have a baby and then go back, best thing i ever done having kids but i do wish i had done it the other way round. good luck

Do you feel you'll be unfulfilled if you don't pursue this? If money's not a big concern, you may be able to hold it off and go when the baby's a bit older. You could always hire a nanny/babysitter/etc when you go back to school.
