What are some natural sleep aids that don't cause cancer?
-
My grandmother is annoying the f*ck out of our whole family after quitting Ambien for about a month. She claims that she's only been sleeping an hour a day, but we all know she's a drama queen who is full of sh*t. She won't try Valerian root because she claims she'll get cancer (she's had cancer twice). What are some natural sleep aids that don't cause cancer? Please save my family from her constant whining and threats. Thank you.

Answer:
When you quit ambien, you don't sleep much for a very very long time. An hour or two a night after a month is not at all unusual. She may be a drama queen, but that doesn't mean she is not suffering. After ambien, there isn't anything that will help much. It takes time for the brain to heal from the damage ambien does, and until then she will not sleep well. This can take many months. Tell her to go to the topix Ambien Withdrawal and Headaches forum and read about the hell ambien makes of our lives, and what it takes to quit and recover. You might want to do the same - when you see how much suffering ambien withdrawals cause, you might a bit more sympathetic towards her.

Melatonin, 3mg, OTC at any pharmacy, I suggest the regular tablets, not the quick-dissolve. Melatonin is a natural chemical produced by the body in the evening when the light level goes down, but as we get older, we may not produce enough to induce a restful sleep. I've been using it for five years with no problems.

Try a warm soothing drink before bed such as warm milk or tea. Some like hot chocolate but the caffeine could add to her troubles so avoid chocolate or coffee. If you can get her to take a warm bubble bath before bed, do that, it helps if you add scented bath beads. You could also get her to listen to some soft soothing music at night, to fall asleep to. She may be over stressed if not sleeping and possibly needs to just relax enough to go to sleep. Good Luck.
To sleep better just relax and switch off, if you can. If you are having trouble switching off at bedtime some light exercise (for example, push ups or sit ups) at bedtime often helps you to relax, unwind and switch off and that often improves your sleep. Strenuous exercise at bedtime is likely to ruin your sleep. Common sleep aids include warm milk, Chamomile tea, 5-HTP, Melatonin and Valerian. Sleep enhancing foods are supposed to include turkey, cherries, oatmeal, bananas, wine and others as in http://au.search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0oGkmOObYlOTD4A3Y0L5gt.;_ylc=X1MDMjExNDcwOTAwMwRfcgMyBGFvAzAEZnIDdXNoLWFucwRob3N0cHZpZANFaG5SR1VvR2t5bTlTWWx3VG9qNWxncDBjTlczeEU2SmJZNEFEeDhWBG5fZ3BzAzAEbl92cHMDMARvcmlnaW4Dc3JwBHF1ZXJ5AyJzbGVlcCBlbmhhbmNpbmcgZm9vZHMiBHNhbwMxBHZ0ZXN0aWQD?p=%22sleep+enhancing+foods%22&fr2=sb-top&fr=ush-ans&vm=r&rd=r1 You can see further tips in http://au.search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0oGkmfVj15PmnkAEHoL5gt.;_ylc=X1MDMjExNDcwOTAwMwRfcgMyBGFvA2FvBGNzcmNwdmlkA0daY2pka29Ha3lsY2NCWk1UMG5vMHdIcmNOV1FBazllajhjQURzS0kEZnIDdXNoLQRmcjIDc2J0bgRuX2dwcwMxBG9yaWdpbgNzcnAEcHFzdHIDImhvdyB0byBmYWxsIGFzbGVlcCBhbmQgc3RheSBhc2xlZXAiBHF1ZXJ5AyJob3cgdG8gZmFsbCBhc2xlZXAgYW5kIHN0YXkgYXNsZWVwIgRzYW8DMQ--?p=%22how%20to%20fall%20asleep%20and%20stay%20asleep%22&fr2=sb-top&fr=ush-&vm=r&rd=r1&pqstr=%22how%20to%20fall%20asleep%20and%20stay%20asleep%22
