What are some herbivorous animals that don't have bacteria to digest cellulose?
-
A friend of mine is trying to argue that we are not physiologically vegetarian just because we don't have bacteria to digest cellulose. Can anyone give me a reason why this is irrelevant or doesn't prove that we're natural omnivores? If not, can anyone provide some examples of animals that are herbivorous but don't have bacteria to digest cellulose?

Answer:
Bonobos Pigs lemurs many species of birds Bees We have herbivore traits; no omni traits: http://bravelucky.wordpress.com/2011/03/01/keiths-myth-page-seven/ http://www.30bananasaday.com/forum/topics/how-do-i-respond-when-a-meat That page on VRG is very convoluted(as it'd have to be to over-ride the fact we are frugivores/raw/vegan.(and wouldn't NEED stores if we were back in our natural environment: the tropics) And we don't NEED cellulose, we just need the juice inside it. Raw-foodists have proven this because: only cooking breaks down cellulose - BUT raw-foodists (who eat enough fruit and veg) are doing great. I lift weights, some win marathons. Long-term raw-vegans: Paul Bragg. Died at 95 in a body-surfing accident. Storm Talifero, below at 53 years old, raw vegan for 31 years http://www.thegardendiet.com/storm2.html Juiceman. No animal products for 50 or 60 years. He's said he often eats fruitarian. There's a recent vid of him here, doing well. He' almost 90. Jim Morris 73 y/o ----------- ps - good bacteria in our intestines feed on Cellulose. Cook it all to heck and the bacteria have little to feed on and good bacteria colonies dwindle. This bacteria is needed to absorb a host of VERY important vitamins - our natural raw diet for the win.

I think all herbivores can digest cellulose, just some do it more efficiently. Ruminants (cows, elk) have multi compartment stomachs that have more bacteria than, say, horses. But they all eat grass (cellulose). You cannot win an argument that humans are not omnivores and you make yourself look silly when you try. One of the largest vegetarian sites online, the Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) says: "There are a number of popular myths about vegetarianism that have no scientific basis in fact. One of these myths is that man is naturally a vegetarian because our bodies resemble plant eaters, not carnivores. In fact we are omnivores, capable of either eating meat or plant foods. The following addresses the unscientific theory of man being only a plant eater." http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/omni.htm#intro
