How to connect surround sound system to play sound that comes out of the tv?
-
My Friend recently gave me his old surround sound system, the only thing is that he doesn't have the instructions manual, so i don't know what the model number is. I have a samsung ue32d5520 tv and have connected an optical audio wire between the tv and the surround sound or the dvd player (that came with it which the sub woofer connects into) which seems to have all of the connections on it. The thing is i don't know how to change the audio output on the surround sound system with the remote ( model number:axd7305). Is this the correct way to set it up? how do i change the output on the surround sound? The model numbers that i know: sub woofer:PIONEER S-V88SW dvd player:PIONEER XV-DV88 remote:PIONEER AXD7305 speakers:PIONEER S-DV88ST Tv:SAMSUNG UE32D5520

Answer:
First, you need to connect the optical cable to an optical INPUT on the surround sound (not an output). The back of the system should be labelled with names for the inputs. Just choose the corresponding input on the front input selector (e.g. DVD, TV, Aux). You may need to set up the menu of the home theatre to "assign" the optical input to a particular input and / or to make set up he input to handle dolby digital 5.1 audio (vs stereo or proLogic or whatever). To select inputs using the remote you need to press the button for the right input port (see above). Sory I can't be more preise but every system is a bit different.

The answer from agb90spruce says it all really. The only thing to add is a link to the user manual for that Pioneer system: http://www.pioneer.eu/uk/support/manuals/XV-DV88/index.html

I wrote this answer elsewhere on this forum but I will answer here as well. I presume you have the European model of the XV-DV88 (I think the US version does not have optical input): Connect the optical cable to the DIGITAL OPT(ical) IN connection. Press the purple 'VIDEO' button on the remote until 'VIDEO 1' appears on the display. Press the SYSTEM MENU button (to the right of the DVD play, pause, stop buttons). 'VIDEO1 INPUT' flashes on display. Press ENTER 'INPUT ANALOG?' (the default) flashes on display. Press right arrow (to right of ENTER) 'INPUT OPTICAL?' flashes on display. Press ENTER 'INPUT OPTICAL' displays briefly, then 'VIDEO1 OPT' displays. You are done. Selecting VIDEO 1 in future displays 'VIDEO1 OPT' instead of 'VIDEO 1'.
