How long after having your wisdom teeth removed can you return to your regular diet/hard food? ?
-
I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed and my upper lip fraenum clipped(to prevent my gap) Friday morning. Three of my teeth had impacted and were taken out normally. The other had to be taken out in sections and closed with dissolvable stitches afterwards. I haven't felt any pain except Friday evening when the anesthesia wore off. The pain went away after I took the prescribed Vicodin and antibiotics. It is now Sunday night. I have only eaten jello, apple sauce, pudding, ice cream, and mashed potatoes since the surgery. I have been brushing my teeth, keeping up with the prescriptions, and doing a salt rinse multiple times a day. I've been very cautious so that I don't get dry socket or an infection, especially since I repeatedly spit a lot of blood out and changed gauze on Friday. I would really like to start gradually moving on to harder foods like bread and pasta in the next few days. Is this fine? I go back for a check up this coming Friday. Should I wait until then? Will not eating any harder food prolong the time I can go back to my regular diet? I want a burger so bad.

Answer:
Its whenever you feel comfortable. I had all 4 out 4 days ago. Today I started to eat harder foods. The first 2 days I stuck to ice cream, applesauce, smoothies (by spoon) and mashed potatoes. On day 3 I ate a little sausage in tiny bites. Today I had some bread and an orange. I think you'll be fine to go to bread and pasta. The biggest thing to think about is not disturbing the area. If you can eat in front and then swallow go for it. If you can get past 3 days with your blood clot intact you can slowly start to go for more. Just perform salt-water soaks 4 times a day to keep your mouth clean and free from infection.

I'd say you can probably eat tomorrow because 3 days is a fair amount of time. If your jaw still hurts while eating, then wait til Tuesday. It's not a matter of gums, just of pain at this point. By the way if you havent been told, stay away from straws because they can cause harm to your sockets. Good luck!
