Jobs for someone in nursing school?

  • Answer:

No. You would not qualify to be a medical assistant as a freshman. You could consider being a CNA. You could also take a 150 hour course and become a Phlebotomist.

To be a medical assistant you don't have to be an RN, but you have to have an Associate degree in that field. Once you get into nursing school you'll have so much studying to keep your GPA up that you won't have time during the school year for a job. You could certainly work in the summer, but you wouldn't be qualified to be a medical assistant. My daughter is an RN and for 3 summers in college she worked in a doctor's office answering the phone & greeting patients. You might be interested in something like that.

No, medical assistants is a licensed position for those who complete the MA training. A nursing student would not be eligible. Some states allow nursing students who have started their nursing clinicals (experience in the hospital) to take the test as a certified nursing assistant or equivalent. Some hospitals will hire nursing students who have completed their first nursing clinical without the CNA licensure. I am working as an EMT, but I have the certification for EMT and I soon will have my paramedic. You would have to go through the class if you wanted to work as an EMT. Your best bet is to work as a nursing assistant or patient care tech after you complete your first semester clinicals. I am interviewing for an ER tech and also a camp health officer due to my experiences as an EMT and as a nursing student. As for not having time for a job, that's not true. It also depends on what type of experiences you have. I don't consistently work right now, but that is also because I am in two full-time programs, paramedic and nursing. I spend about 58 hours a week in class and clinicals.
