I have a question about heroes.

City of Heroes PC game question.?

  • I recently bought City of heroes/ City of Villans Versus pack at a local thrift store for 2$. It was all there, including a few unused game/time cards. After installing it, and now being forced to wait a couple hours worth of updates I noticed there is a "City of Heroes:Freedom" which is both free to play and VIP. Is my copy of CoH obsolete now? Or will it be patched up to "Freedom". Also what are the big differences? I've never played any of these games before. Thanks.

    Welcome to Paragon City! City of Heroes and CoH: Freedom is the same game that has been around for almost 8 years now. "Freedom" is the relatively new "hybrid model" of massively-multiplayer online game with three different "tiers." There's "totally free", there's "premium" for people who have bought pretty much anything game-related (such as a boxed version or time cards) and there's "VIP" for people who pay the monthly subscription fee. Free players have quite a few limitations, but can still create two characters, see 90% or so of the game, and go all the way to level 50. Premium players get more perks, and can buy more on an a la carte basis from the NCSoft store. VIP players get the most perks, of course, but a lot of veteran players still think it's the most "bang for the buck" of the three types of accounts. (See also: http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Premium_Player#Premium -- from Paragon Wiki, the wiki of all things CoH/CoV, also referred to as "CoX"!) As you've hopefully seen after the update has finished patching (it says here the question was asked 17 hours ago) you should have the most up-to-date, current version of the game. Most MMO's are updated relatively frequently, requiring relatively small patches each week or each month -- at a guess I'd say CoX averages a patch every three weeks, which usually takes 30 minutes or less.
