How hard will it be for me to become a police officer?
-
Alright..first off im in college right now studying criminal justice. Im only a freshman right now but i have a high aspiration to join to military. I want to join the navy and im going through the enlistment process right now. When i come back i would love to join my cities police force. There are just a few things im kind of worried about. First off, im about 5'6 and about 130 pounds. I do see some police officers who are about the same height as me but their jacked out of their minds. Ive begun lifting and all that to try and gain muscle cause ive dreamed about becoming a police officer for along time. Anyways my question is how difficult will it be for me to have a realistic chance of getting on the force? and also everyone keeps telling me that i dont have much a chance cause its all about "who you know" which i do know a few police officers, but not too many of them. Anyways if anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
It depends. It is great that you are in college. Getting a college degree is one of the best things that you can do if you want to become a police officer. Get at least a 4 year degree. Get the highest grade point average that you can. Participate in a couple extracurricular activities while in college. Consider doing some regular volunteer work. Consider trying to get an internship with a law enforcement agency while in college. Many people would suggest choosing a major other than criminal justice though. There are many good majors for police officers and people that want to become police officers. Joining the military might be good for you. Veterans get extra points on civil service tests. Also, some people simply like to hire qualified veterans whenever they get the chance to. All else being equal, veterans that have a college degree have a very good chance of getting hired. Don't worry about your height. It shouldn't be a problem. Definitely become as physically fit as you can. Keep a positive attitude. Do whatever you can to make yourself the best candidate that you can. For example, try to improve all of your communication skills as much as possible. Maintain a good reputation. Keep a good driving record. Don't get bad credit. Best of luck!

Knowing someone may help on very small departments, but it won't effect your chances on a medium or larger department. Your height and weight are minor too. You will be taught tactics to control people, you don't need exceptional strength.

It depends on what country you live in. If you are wanting to join the police in the United Kingdom then there is no chance. Government is making the British police force much smaller and no new police officers are being recuited until after 2015. The British government also intends to use private security companies for normal street policing.
