Debating on what country to go to for my University exchange? Suggestions?
-
I'll be going on an exchange through my university from May 2013-May 2014. It's quite far away, but since its a full year exchange we have to apply through our school by the start of August 2012, so I'm currently focusing on making my decisions. I'm very torn on where to spend my year abroad. So far, I'm thinking either England, Singapore, New Zealand, or Australia (all somewhat different kinds of places, haha). I've always been pretty sure I wanted to do my year abroad in England, but I'm starting to think I would like to go somewhere warm and sunny (I'm from Canada, and I'd love to have a winter without cold haha). Cost of living is also a factor that I'm considering. I also want to go somewhere that makes traveling to other countries somewhat easy AND has a lot of fun things to do. I'm open to new ideas, or advice on the places that I'm currently debating between. I think Singapore ranks the highest on the list right now, but I'm worried living in Asia for a year would be almost too much of a culture shock for me...thats a huge change. So, ANY advice would be awesome. If anyone has any exchange experience, please share. Thanks!

Answer:
Well, if you're from Canada I would highly suggest any french-speaking countries because, well, French language here is an asset to have for any job and it'll give you an edge when you try to find a job after uni. It'll be extremely hard since you won't have experience necessary for most jobs. Out of the ones you listed, I would suggest Australia or New Zealand. Really, really beautiful places to be in. Singapore - a year is too long, it's very different from Canada. Also, look up their laws and customs, highly important.

I'm oddly following in your exact foot steps, I was just an exchange student in Germany for the first semester of my Junior year (I'm still in high school however) and it was great to learn another language, and it's actually been benefitting me as well. Any how, Australia would be an awesome place, i'm planning on going to a university there, but also a friend of mine went to New Zealand and said it was beautiful. England is nice, but its VERY expansive.
