Joining the Military? National Guard 31B (Military Police)?

  • Okay, so I am 16 and come from a family that well, isnt very wealthy. My whole life I have wanted to be a cop. To save lifes. Military has seemed to always be my plan. My dad fought in veitnam, and was well decorated. He is also very against me joining the military. I have always wanted to go army, but hes against it. Is the national guard a good way to go? I figure i can become a 31B (military police). They'll pay for college. So ill recieve military experience and a college degree. Whats best for my situation?

  • Answer:

Joining the military might be good for you. However, it is a very big commitment. Definitely give it much thought. Speak to as many people as you can before joining. If you do join, make the most of it. It can be a great experience. Being a veteran can help you get a police officer job. Veterans get extra points on civil service tests. Some police departments that require applicants to have college will waive some or all of their college requirements for veterans. However, you should get a college degree regardless of whether you join the military or not. Also, some people simply like to hire qualified veterans whenever they get the chance to. The National Guard could be a good choice. Talk to multiple recruiters from the different branches. Explore all of your options. Consider becoming an officer in the military if possible. Getting police officer jobs can be very competitive. However, all else being equal, veterans with a college degree have a very good chance of getting hired. Best of luck!

I would actually take a look into getting the military to pay for your college through an ROTC scholarship route if you can. That will greatly benefit you both during and after military service.

Joining the military is a huge step, one that will change your life forever. You do not join the military for the benefits. You join the military because you want to serve and love your country. So, if the reason you want to enlist is because the military will help you with school, then go another route. Just trying to be honest. If you decide to join there are a couple ways you can go. 1. Rotc: The army has rotc programs at a lot of universities. The army/national guard will waive the TUITION FEE ONLYm not your room and board or your books etc. Just the tution. So, for me, they waived $4,287.96 per semester. They will also gives you monthly stipens which you can spend on anything you want. The money is crap. Once a month you will go away for the weekend to your armory and do training. Then, in the summer you will be sent to basic. Then you will go back to school and be in the rotc program. Once a week you will have Physical training alongside general and rotc classes. Then in the summer you go away for two weeks. Once completed, you are a second lieutenat in the Army National Guard. Then you go to your tech school. 2. Remember, once you sign those papers you can be sent anywhere. The national guard has become the reserves of the main army, and has seen action in almost any theatre of combat since WW2. So, you can be in school during a semester and sent off. If you are in ROTC, you are guarenteed no deployment until you finish. 3. The commitment for the national guard is 8 years. You can do 4 or 6 active, 2 in the reserves, and 2 in the IRR (Infantry Ready Reserves). Active duty means you are ready to be deployed to any part of the country or the world at any time. Reserves are called up when the army needs new and experienced soldiers, and the IRR gets called up only if a world war where to happen. 4. Your dad does not want you to join because the military is a very serious opportunity. Remember, though you get the opportunity of a lifetime, you are also putting yourself in harms way. Vietnam was chaos, and we lost a lot of good men there. Your father does not want you to go because he gets sick with the idea of losing you. When the time comes and you decide, you need to cut the strings from him. Seeing you march will be the proudest day of his life. 5. Remember kid, you join the military because you want to give not get. Remember what you are fighting for.

matt Here it is If you want to be a cop don't join up to be a MP. Why you ask? Cause when you get out you will still have to go to your states police academy. Cause being a MP and being a local or state cop are different. Some states waver some parts of that, check with your state troopers in your state to see what the military can do for you and what are the qualifications to be a cop. If i was you i would look into the airforce or Navy. The airforce treats their people the best. And most jobs when you get out give you some type of degree and transition into a civilian job, all of them BUT security forces. Don't do that one. Its guard duty for convoys in Iraq. I was army infantry. And if you were a MP and you an I went to try out for a cop job you would have no better chance than me. Being a MP, will not make it easier to be a cop. And most states require a 2 or 4 year degree. If you are doing the Army pick computers, or satellites, or Electronics, that way if you get hurt and cant be a cop you still have a job that gave you a skill so you can work, a MP in the real world doesn't allow you to be anything, its useless. Also do the best you can on your ASVAB, it will determine what type of job you can get in the military. if you score too low you cant be a MP or anything but infantry or something stupid like that. Take SAT and ACT prep classes and tests to help study for it. good luck and join the airforce if you can, women are better looking, treat their people better. Just don't make rank as fast. I was in Iraq and we were staying in no A/C having tents, the Airforce was in real buildings with A/C so cold that they wore bathrobes in the morning to warm up. Food for thought.
