Fundraising Ideas for volunteering abroad?
-
I recently found a volunteering opportunity abroad that I really want to do but can't afford. It's in South Africa and I would be volunteering at the Penguin Conservation Center where sick/hurt penguins are cared for and then released. I hope to be able to do this 6 week opportunity in the summer of 2013. The cost of the contribution fees, housing, ect. is about $1900 plus airfare. Unfortunately, I am currently a college student and don't have the money to pay for this on my own. Because of this I am trying to ind grants/scholarships and ways to fund raise in order to help pay for the cost. If anyone has any good ideas, i would greatly appreciate it! Thank you in advance!

I doubt you are going to find anyone to sponsor you or any scholarship to fund your trip. You might want to consider getting a part time job (check your school's office of career advisement to find jobs seeking college students) and saving up the money if you really want to go.

Hello Aubry, yes it's quite hard to cover all that amount, but you can do some raffles or pub quiz and get some of the local businesses where you are to give you freebies to give out as prizes, but I doubt you will be able to raise money in the thousands. You can raise some money from your family & friends, you can also ask them to donate you unwanted items and re-sell at car boot sales or second hand and flea markets, you can run arts/craft workshops with friends making hand-made items for re-sale.. but again, you might just get to cover your flight cost, which could be a start. Therefore, I would suggest to go for volunteering options with local organisations which can offer you a low-cost option or volunteer for the local charities or NGOs in the country of your choice which would gladly receive your helping hand without charging you, or maybe appreciating a small donation, and where understandingly you just have to cover your accommodation /meals, and all of this at local rates. You can find a good number of these options on the Planet Volunteer database: www.planetvolunteer.org.uk There you can search for volunteering opportunities by cost (free, low cost programs, or just accommodation costs, or donation) in the country and activity you prefer: try it out.. and happy volunteering!
