Answer:
I think the best thing would be to ask your doctor about Early Intervention services in your area. In most states in the US, you can have a specialist come to your house to assess your child and give her speech therapy and other play-based therapies if necessary. Speech therapy will consist of games and will be fun for your daughter, and will allow you to see ways to help get her talking more. Other than that: Read to her Play games. You said she likes playing in sand so one game you could try might be to bury different toys (plastic animal toys, for example) and as she finds each toy you could tell her what the toy is named. Ask a lot of questions, even if she doesn't answer them. "Would you like to eat cheese or a banana?" Then if she looks at the cheese answer excitedly for her "You want to eat Cheese!". Try to give her a lot of choices so you can ask and answer questions about them. Edit: sorry, I just realized you are from the UK. Check around for similar service there. Here it's called Early Intervention but you probably have something similar with a different name there. Otherwise, look into "speech therapy".

Sounds to me as though shes doing good considering the circumstances. A friend of mine has a mildly autistic 3 year old son who doesnt hardly speak at all. Count yourself lucky. Time and patience.

You could try to learn Makaton. Your speech and language department should be able to support you with this. I'm assuming she is already being seen by a therapist? If not, she should be under the team, so I would give them a call. Makaton is good as it always using speech alongside the sign, and also encourages the child to look at you and some children pick it up really quickly. Mirror her play, trying to be face to face and below eye level if possible, as this will encourage eye contact. Copy the ways she plays with objects, she may not be using toys in the typical way, but it is her way of doing things. Copy the sounds and words she makes and uses as well, the sounds are her way of communicating. Model language to your child using simple language until her vocab extends. I always remember a phrase from some ASD training I did once which was ' we should get into the child's world, not expect the child to come into ours'. Try not to ask too many questions, especially as she's not interested in answering. Signing should help with the potty training, but it sounds as if she's not quite ready for this yet. Seek professional help for your daughter, they should be able to give you lots of strategies to help you.

Its very mild from what you discribed. With the proper help, which you are doing she'll be fine. My daughter is the same way and we started Speech Therapy and in few months she has alot of words and now putting 2-3 words together. Remember you don't see adults that are on the spectrum...they grow out of it. My daughter is doing so good now...only alittle behind on langauge...good luck!
