How long does it take to correct astigmatism?

I have astigmatism, can I wear "normal" contact lenses?

  • I actually have toric lenses for my daily use. However, I'm really interested in getting circle lenses. To people who wear them or know about them, the normal/spherical prescripted ones cost about $15-25 USD. But the toric ones cost well over $45 USD and is limited in choice. I don't plan on wearing them everyday and would like to have a cheap pair. So I was wondering it I can go without the toric lenses? I heard there's actually a formula that have worked for people with mild astigmatism and it's Power + (Cylindrical Power/2) I don't know if I should take the risk with that equation because it gives me a different power than my original. Here's my prescription: Right Power: -3.50 | Cylindrical Power (Astigmatism) -1.75x180 Left Power: -4.00 | Cylindrical Power (Astigmatism) -2.25x180 Is my astigmatism too severe and will have to get the toric lenses? Thanks!

Yes, you can use normal contact lenses, my dad uses normal ones even though he has astigmatism. It'll be a bit more difficult to get use to, so I suggest if this is ur first time wearing contacts to go with the astigmatism ones then if you want to save money etc. get regular ones.

Your astigmatism is significant enough that you won't see well with only a spherical correction. Could you walk around a party? Yes Would you be able to safely drive? No

That formula only works when the Cylinder power is no greater than - 1.00 The most that can be added to the Sphere power is - 0.50....which leaves you with a lot of uncorrected astigmatism. Without Toric lenses you would have to settle for quite poor vision.

As 2 others mentioned, you have too much astigmatism to use a spherical equivalent (well, I suppose you could get them, but I guarantee you won't be happy with your vision). Maybe get Circle lenses with NO power and wear under your regular glasses?

I think it's best to consult ur optometrist. I have astigmatism and I use normal contacts just fine. My power is only half of yours though.
