How to get a better package from a job offer?

First and inital Job Offer. What to do?

  • Ok so Im 22y/o gradutating Rutgers Business School this May with a B.S. in Supply Chain Management and Marketing Science. While I have never had an internship, I have been working in a professional environment as work-study student in the University's Office of Financial Aid since September 2010. I have a cumulative GPA of 3.63 and major GPA of 3.91. Recently (last week) I flew out for a last and final Interview with Caterpillar Logisitics in Illinois. This week the company contacted me with a job offer for 60k. I, in all my initial excitement verbally accepted the offer and my recruiter said she would get the offer package(salary, benefits, etc.) together and emailed to me. I am now very confused. Should I have tried to negotiate this offer? I live in NJ and would be relocating to Illinois for this job and I was just wondering should/could I renegotiate this offer. The only reason that I was so willing to accept is because I thought this was an outstanding offer for a student fresh off the campus. Rutgers Business School is the number 1 business school in NJ and one of the top b-schools in the country which they may or may not know. That said, having received a quality education from RBS could I leverage this to ask for more. I dont know the market worth for this degree. I would like some advice on this matter. What should I do? What do you think of the offer, company,etc? Thank you all in advance.

    I think Caterpillar is a great company-my grandfather worked for them his entire working career as an engineer. 60K is a very nice salary for a first job after graduation, and a single person in Illinois can live quite nicely on it. I'm not sure if you'll be in Peoria or Joliet or somewhere else, but the cost of living in those communities is fairly low, especially when compared with other parts of the state. Don't forget that your benefits are included as part of the offer, including insurance, 401k or pension (they used to have a pension, I don't know if they still do), tuition reimbursement options, stock options, etc. I think the only thing you could try to negotiate at this point would be to ask your recruiter if any relocation assistance is offered, since you'll be moving from NJ to IL. Often this is somewhere around a month's salary paid up front in a lump sum, so you'd be looking at around a 5K "bonus" if they agreed to it.

Offer - very good - average B-school salary is closer to $45 - $50K. too late now to really re-negotiate unless you want to take the chance that the offer gets pulled.
