Hand held skate sharpener or electric skate sharpener?
-
First off, I really don't need the "easy to bring everywhere" thing; what ever I will use to sharpen my skates I will leave at home. Also if I have to pay more for an electric one, that's not a problem either, I've been saving. So to get down to what I need out of my skate sharpener: I've been told that, because I am such a light weight, I need very sharp skates. So what I was wondering was does the hand held really sharpen as well as the electric? And again, money and maneuverability is not an issue. I only plan on sharpening my skates at home every now and then and I was saving for an electric sharpener anyway so I can afford it (I only found out about hand held sharpeners about a week ago).

Answer:
No, no, no and NO! Attempting to sharpen your blades when you aren't a qualified professional will do nothing but ruin them. You may think that sharpening skates is easy, but it is not. To sharpen skates, you need to be able to know how to get the correct hollow size (everyone skates on different sized rockers), how to ensure that the edges are even (and that there ARE edges) as well as how to specifically sharpen figure or hockey skates. Unless you're planning on becoming a professional skate sharpener in a pro shop (which I highly doubt) I suggest you scrap this idea completely. The hand held sharpener probably wouldn't be much use anyway - they're fine to touch up your blades, but it's still a tricky process and quite pointless because you'd have to take them to be sharpened normally as well. It never costs more than $20 to get a pair of skates sharpened, and you don't need them sharpened awfully often. It really isn't worth ruining your blades with home sharpenings. Good luck! :)

Never never never never never never never NEVER sharpen your own skates unless you are properly trained on how to sharpen skates. The hand held ones can *touch up* a sharpening if you have nicks in the blade, but it won't do anything else to it. "Electric" isn't the right work to use, because you still have to guide the skate. You also need to make sure that there's a hollow in the blade and that the edges are even.

Do not EVER sharpen your skates yourself! That is the quickest way to ruined blades! Please don't do this. Fork over the $10 and get them sharpened by a professional.
