What's good to do in Philadelphia in December when travelling on a shoestring budget?

Suggestion for London travel, anyone?

  • Hi, I plan to travel to London with my best friend in December...on a shoestring budget. Where would be the best place to stay in London? With best I mean somewhere safe, near to attractions, and affordable food. We'd like to try local food. If there are exotic and street foods, we'd love to try them! :D Which hotels offer decent but really cheap accommodation? With cheap I mean as long as it has a bed and a bathroom I'm okay with it. It doesn't have to be fancy at all. Not inclusive of breakfast is okay too. Just very basic accommodation. Are there cheaper alternatives to hotel? I'd love to know :) What places are a real must-see if we were to stay for only 3-4 days? Activities? We'd like to experience festivals, independent art shows or just good local independent music :) Would it be frugal to get a London Pass with travel? We want to see the best of mainstream and independent London. I'm sorry if I sound very enthusiastic about it. It's going to be our first time to travel together and I plan to schedule our arrival exactly on her birthday, 12/12/12. It's kind of a celebration of her bday, our graduation from college and the date itself :) Nothing superstitious. It's just that it won't happen again in our lifetime. It's quite a luxury for us to be travelling to London-I'm seriously saving up for it!- so I just want to make the most of it. I'd appreciate any kind of help :)

  • Answer:

Stay in hostels and cheap hotels (Travelodge, Easy Hotel), out in the suburbs is cheaper. Get a travelcard (£8.50 off peak) or Oystercard for traveling, if you stick to buses and the tram (Croydon, Wimbledon area) you can travel from 04:30 one day to 04:29 the next day for £4,20 (you will need an oyster card for this) as often as you like on any TFL service. Eat in cheap cafes and fast food outlets (chicken places are of particularly good value).

In terms of things to do I would recommend The Tower of London, London Eye, Big Ben, Westminister Abbey and Buckingham Palace. Also be sure to take a trip on a ferry along the Thames. In terms of places to stay I would suggest checking out - http://www.hotelscombined.com/City/London.htm?a_aid=45702. There is a good list to choose from there.

Stay in hostels, try not to eat in places which are near attractions, prices will be sky high! you can travel all over London via the tube/buses both of which are relatively inexpensive!
