Travel out of Buxton: Car or Rail to Manchester Airport or Heathrow?
-
We'll be vacationing in Buxton, England the last week of September thru the first part of October, after visiting London. To head back to San Francisco, our family of three are thinking of flying out of Manchester to San Francisco, rather than heading back to London Would it be easier to fly out of Manchester with a connection at Heathrow, or should we drive back to Heathrow with a rental and then fly out of Heathrow with a nonstop back to San Fran? Travel duration would be shorter to drive back to Heathrow and then fly out, but we've never drove in the UK. Should we be scared to drive on the M1, M6 or M25? If we should fly out of Heathrow, should we drive down Monday night, stay the night in Hounslow/near Heathrow, and then fly out the next day to break up the trip? I know: so many questions! :) Thank you for reading this far. ;) I LOVE your country and can't wait to visit!!!!!

Answer:
I'd agree with previous poster. Try flying home out of Manchester direct. If you do decide to drive back to LHR then WITHOUT DOUBT take the M40 option. MUCH better route, MUCH less likely to get jammed and drops you off on the right side of London. And you don't say what time your flight is. But much more relaxed anyway to stay near LHR the night before. No worries about traffic jams then.

First - have you checked whether there are any flights from Manchester direct to SF? It is an international airport - a friend of mine used regularly to fly there from Vancouver, Canada. However, if there are not, there is no reason to be scared of driving on our motorways, provided you are sensible about it. Statistically, they are the safest roads in the UK. Incidentally, I would travel M6 from Manchester to Birmingham, then M42/40 to the M25.
