Is university in Ireland much different than a University in America?

Does anybody know much about the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland?

  • The University of Ulster in Coleraine, Londonderry in Northern Ireland, does anybody know much about it? Would you recommend it as a university and how does it compare to other universities such as Queens University Belfast, also in Northern Ireland and Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin, both in the Republic of Ireland. Is the University of Ulster well recognised and is it at the top of the list? I'm from the Republic of Ireland and I know the university system inside out here in regards to where to go to do what and I'm just not sure about in Northern Ireland or in the UK. Thanks!

I know the Jordanstown campus for Ulster Uni as I did a Business course there several years ago but not Coleraine campus.......... I think with a University you would need to speak to people who are attending and you are not going to easily find people who can illegitimately compare several as they simply have not attended several, so it is down to what they think, have heard, jealous, met someone from there and didn;t like them sort of comparison... get a pin and stick it in a board for the same affect. Queens is a better University in my opinion for me than Ulster and I have done a lots of work with Queens however I have no idea about Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. EGSA which is in Belfast http://egsa.org.uk/ register on their website, you can phone and speak to a guidance worker or email and ask the questions you need to ask, it is a free service and covers not onlu NI but the whole of the UK... Educational Guidance Service for Adults independant, impartial and free so worth asking Fresher Days....go and see for yourself Get online to the University chat rooms and ask the sytudent who are there....think it is called the student chat room and you just put in the Uni to get on their board ADD: Saw you asked this question again and having read some of the answers you are getting thought I needed to make one or two points. Unless you live/work in NI you don't know, so those that say it is sectarian take with a pinch of salt ....I'm English I worked on the peaceline in Belfast for 6 years sectarian my @ss ........... what people 'think' , what the media says really doesn't matter as it is often wrong....opinions based on what someone reads means little I KNOW both NI Uni's, studied in one, worked in the other....as I said Queen's is better The NI are some of the highest achivers in the whole of the UK, they get the highest grades and many a Tesco till operator has a degree, yuou will be hard pushed to find an office junior in NI who hasn't got a degree you really don't find that in any other country in the UK.......the NI are generally achievers and not only do they walk into the Uni's but many go back and continue to do part time while working too, they are also offered places at many of the top Uni's in the UK.

The University of Ulster is NOT a good university. The Guardian rates it 88th out of 119 universities in the UK. It should not be confused with Queens which is rated 50th. Sectarianism is destroying Northern Ireland and their Unis reflect this. Good people are leaving and everything is going down the Suwannee.
