How to you make eyes for a lizard out of clay?
-
I'm making a sculpture for my art class that's loosely based on a monitor lizard/komodo dragon and i have redone the head like three or four times cause either it looks like crap or it's too big. but i am having a really hard time with the eyes and cannot for the life of me figure out how to sculpt them.

Answer:
Take a piece of fairly wet clay large enough to make the eye lids and just slap it on right over the eye lid area (Use a picture for reference). After that carve it to match the picture and smooth when needed. This is not something I can explain as much as something that you need to do until it looks right to you. I would advise a hook shaped tool for that job and not the knife as much. the wetness of the clay should make it okay to fire without any binding tricks. Then make a small ball for the eye and insert it into the eye hole. Take some wet clay once again and put it around the ball until it forms a smooth semi-circle type shape inside the whole eye area. So the pupil doesn't simply stick out like a chameleon's eye. Now take a scribe and lightly indicate within the eye where and how the eye will be colored by sketching a pupil in it should be semi-visible from before when the ball was put in. Do the same thing to the other eye and make sure they both match and then touch up on the upper nose area because in doing that you may have changed the shape of that zone just a little bit.

They bulge out, so add to the surface of the head. Add a rounf eye, then add lower and upper lids. Make slitted pupil and you have lizard eyes.
