Digital audio output(coaxial) to rca 5.1 surround on reciver?

  • OK so I have a laptop with a HDMI output and also an 3.5mm headphones jack output on it and I want to run 5.1 thru my reciever when watching bluray. I know that a headphones output can't truly support surround sound because its meant for 2 speakers which go on ur head. So my question is that if I can run the sound thru an HDMI into my TV then from there hook up an RCA digital converter that will take use of the digital RCA audio output on my TV (orange) and convert it to individual RCA channels ( like center,sub,rear, front etc)for my reciver which doesn't have a digital audio input on it (orange) so basicly I need to take the output and split it for each channel on my reviver. Is there a wire that does this or do I have to buy like a box converter? Thanks and post links if u can on things I need to buy in order for it to work. PS sorry for spelling

    It depends on your TV, if it can pass the digital surround from HDMI to its digital out. Many cannot, but simply downmix to PCM stereo - only the built in tuner passes Dolby Digital. Part 2 is a DD to discrete decoder. Those are rare and not particularly cheap. And yes, it is a box. You are probably best to get a modern surround receiver with HDMI pass through, or standalone blu-ray player with discrete 5.1 out.

Part 2 is a DD to discrete decoder. Those are rare and not particularly cheap. And yes, it is a box. You are probably best to get a modern surround receiver with HDMI pass through, or standalone blu-ray player with discrete 5.1 out.

It would be better to by pass the TV using a converter box that will split the signal into digital audio out and HDMI in on the TV, many people try this getting the right cables and converter box to find out that they cannot get sound, not only do you run the risk of the TV having no HDMI conversion available you also run the risk that the Computer does not follow the HDMI protocol...many computers will have no sound at all through HDMI or they pass on an anolog signal through HDMI, this will depend on what sound card you have in the Lap top and what it is capable of doing also how its connected to the Graphics card through an HDMI output....
