No you don't and yes you can! As long as your TV has the relevant ports that connect to the relevant wires. I have an alba Home Theatre System hooked up to my TV via the red, white and yellow wires and it works perfectly. Make sure though it is backwards compatible with ie DVD/Blu Ray Players incase you buy in the future although usually they should have the same ports for the aforementioned wires. To avoid extra cost and disappointment I find sticking with the same brands is usually a good idea ie If your TV is Sony then buy a Sony Home Theatre System but only if its cheap. On the other hand you can buy DVD Player/Home Theatre combos which essentially kill two birds with one stone but if one or the other breaks then everything will have to be replaced! Best of luck ;)
