What professional HD camera should I buy tonight?
-
I am a first time documentary maker, and I need to know tonight which camera I should buy. I am starting to film next week. I am willing to purchase a used one because I am only willing to pay up to $1,000, but it needs to be HD/24p. So far I am interested in the Canon XL2, but I have looked at so many camera these past couple of weeks and couldn't make a decision. Please give me your best advice on what camera I need.

Answer:
None of them. Two weeks is far from sufficient time to make such a decision. Six months would be more like it. Proper selection of such equipment is an involved process: For the first three months, read reviews (especially at cnet.com), make notes and comparison charts, read more reviews, and think, think, think. Eliminate any model that lacks something really important to you. Read and think some more. At the four-month point, eliminate at least one more model. Read and think again. Five months in, you should have only two or three models left to choose from, and at least one of them will most likely be discontinued. If it's the one you thought was the best candidate, either buy it at a closeout price, or take a serious look at what has replaced it. At six months, you should be almost certain that you are about to make the best choice.

Try leasing one. Less upfront expense and you return it when you are finished. Or you can borrow someone's camcorder, pay them a small amount for the priviledge.
