Animals in Banff,Alberta Canada?

Viewing animals in Vancouver BC Canada?

  • Hi! Me and my family are going up to Vancouver for a week and we really wanted to see some moose, beavers, orcas, bears, etc. I keep looking for parks and whatnot but I can't seem to find many. Also, it'd be good to know if the animals are hibernating or not. We're willing to drive a couple hours away to see some animals :) thank you! The animals we want to see mostly are: moose, beavers, otters, bears, wolves, and whales. I know some are super hard to spot but I thought I'd just mention it. Like are there any national parks that have a lot of wildlife like this? I'm trying to find parks that are free and cheap because I don't want my parents paying a lot of money :)

  • Answer:

You're best off heading to the aquarium and the zoo and if you're really that zealous about whales, you can take a whale watching tour.

Your best place for land animals is the Greater Vancouver zoo. Trying to spot animals such as moose, beavers, and bears in the wild is rather difficult not to mention dangerous. Wild animals don't normally venture near the cities and finding them in the wilderness can take days or weeks to treking around some rather harsh terrain and its generally not advisable without a guide. The Vancouver aquarium will have various sea animals -- sea lions, seals, beluga whales, etc. -- but you won't find any killer whales in captivity in BC. There are whale watching tours out of Vancouver. You can occationally see them on the ferry to Victoria, but you take your chances.

Vancouver is a great big city. The only place you will see anything like that is a zoo. I live in the Yukon, surrounded by wilderness, and ever here, wildlife sighting is a tricky business. As a wilderness tour guide in the summer, I see bears perhaps once per week, if that. There is a beaver pond about 1.5km from my house, so, they are easy, but in Vancouver? I am surrounded by moose, but, they are an amazingly difficult beast to see, and, they don't live near Vancouver anyway. I saw a wolf in the wild once, and I've never seen an otter. What you are asking is similar to going to Central Park in New York City to see animals. Vancouver has Stanley park, and once I saw a seal on the shore there, but, that's about it. You can't see wild animals in a huge city!
