How long does pericoronitis last?

How do you know the difference between pericoronitis and just your teeth growing in?

  • I'm 14, and the rest are grown in, but it feels like a layer of gum on top of it. It doesn't really hurt, or feel uncomfortable though. I think that one was the last to grow in too. I'm afraid of getting it removed, and I'd like to hold off on that for as long as possible, or completely avoid it all together. I will have it removed if I need to though. :/

  • Answer:

Pericoronitis hurts! It is a bacterial infection, and usually occurs when bacteria gets trapped underneath a flap of gum tissue that lays over a partially erupted molar - usually a lower wisdom tooth. Rinse your mouth frequently with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water), swish it around good, and spit out. If this doesn't resolve in the next few days, go see the dentist for a check.
