How is geology related to forestry?

Job openings in geology?

  • I'm just about to complete my general AA degree and have settled on geology as a major. The current plan is to go to a university (I've applied to one and gotten in already, Central Washington University) and get a BS in geology, and maybe or maybe not continue on to get a Master's, depending on what I find out as I work towards the BS. Going $40,000 into debt is a bit daunting, and I would like to know what sort of job prospects out there for a geology major before proceeding too much further. Does anybody have any raw numbers or like a general idea of how many jobs in geology-related careers there will be in around 2-3 years from now? Or, on an even more basic level, are the job prospects looking good for new geologists in the near future?

  • Answer:

You should be ok getting a job when you graduate. Right now, it's tricky, but can be done (I just managed to get a job, 6 months after graduating). The current financial mess the world is in makes it hard, but things should look a little better by the time you finish. As for numbers, I have no idea, I'm afraid. The best bets will be the Oil industry, and Mineral mining out in Australia. They're going through a boom that doesn't show any signs of slowing. My advice is to go the whole hog, get a Masters, make sure you can drive a car, and be prepared to travel (a long way).
