How late is too late to transfer to a different high school?

How can I transfer to another high school in NYC?

  • I'm in the 9th grade and and FTM... I've been at my current school since the 6th grade. My school is homophobic, sexist, and racist. Classes can never go on without someone getting kicked out or fight with someone else or the teacher. I feel very neglected by the teachers, councilors, and principle. Their not helpful at all and are only interested in yelling at every single student. I feel like I'm being neglected because I'm transgender though most of the adults don't know and probably think I'm gay. I've been trying to get a safety transfer from my school but they keep refusing to give me one or help me get out of there very soon. I've been attacked, had homophobic slurs said to me, and I'm not being respected as an FTM at that school. I've had to skip class and just skip school entirely because none of the adults cared enough when I needed help. The school is just upside down even though we got a new principal who actually worse. So what should I do and and how can I get a transfer? I applied in 8th grade and got back into the same school. I then did a repeal to three high schools and still got sent to the same school. I then applied in December and still got sent back. I then did a round 1 of applying again and STILL got sent back. Now I filled out an application for round 2 and I'm waiting for the results AGAIN.

  • Answer:

Did you apply for a transfer this past December? That would have been the best time to do this. Your parents need to get involved here. THEY need to go to your borough enrollment center and politely but firmly say they won't leave till you get a safety transfer. When parents make it clear that they want their kid in a different school, things DO happen. But otherwise, you're stuck. NYC is a hard place to change high schools. I can't understand why you are still in the same school, even though you could have applied in either December of 8th grade or December of 9th grade for a transfer as part of the high school selection process. That would have been the easiest way to do this by far!
