What is the whole purpose behind unlocking an iPhone?

Unlocking an iPhone question?

  • (DISCLAIMER)I know there is no option for a jailbreak as of now on ios 5.1, but as soon as the jailbreak comes out im going to jailbreak. So, I was wondering about unlocking an iPhone. Is there a seperation between an unlock and jailbreak? What does it EXACTLY do? Do you still get billed by verizon for unlocking? Can verizon tell if your unlocking? Thanks.

yes, jailbreak and unlock are 2 different things in order to unlock, has to jalbreak first and UNLOCKED mean you can used GSM (have sim) carrier such as T-moble, AT&T if you still used verizon as you carrier, then duhhhh, you still be billed for it and no, verizon can't tell if the phone unlocked/ jailbreak or not although unlock allow you to able to use different GSM(have sim card) carrier, there is not a unlock for ios 5.1 (because of the baseband (modern fireware) of ios 5.1 not yet exploided) so is all ios 5

...unlocking is sliding the slide to unlock thing, which is done several times a day by most people. Jailbreaking is modification of the iPhones software and operating system, which voids all warranties and can ruin your phone but allows you to do things with your iPhone Apple normally doesn't let you do.
