It comes down to how many stereo devices you plan to connect. If you have 2 CD players, you only need a 2 channel unit. If you use 2 CDs and a laptop, you need 3 channels, etc. Having the right number of channels allows the devices to stay plugged in and you can fade back and forth. Otherwise, if you don't have enough channels, you end up unplugging one device and plugging in the other.
