Facebook's new policy abused my privacy. Why do I have to give them my phone number?

I created my facebook account for connecting with a specific group of people and friends. The only way I can effectively protect my privacy is not to release too much on a social media network. Why FB changed their policy and keep asking for a phone number? Could we trust them not to use members' phone for some other purposes?
