What do you do in the Canadian reserves?

What preperations should I make to join the army reserves and what should I expect?

  • I'm 16 and my grades aren't excellent so I'm surveying my options (community college, work, and the army) and I was wondering, IF I join the reserves , if I should be physically fit I can run a mile in about 7-8 minutes, I'm not good at pushups, but I'm good at curl-ups, so I'm good at cardio and abs and legs Will I have to go to a bootcamp first? What do people do in the reserves? (daily activities) Is it possible to go to college part time in addition to being in the reserves? Any additional information would be great, thanks!

  • Answer:

Reserve Basic Training is your normal Army boot camp, complete with Advanced Individual Training. So, yes, you will have to be physically fit. You will go to boot camp. Basic Combat Training lasts about 10 weeks, and AIT is a minimum of 6 weeks, but it all depends on your MOS. Reservists don't do much, but they belong to a unit and they get deployed if called up. If you're planning on going to college, I say join the National Guard. They're two different entities. You can get deployed in both, but you only drill for a weekend a month and two weeks a year if you're in the Guard. Google your state's National Guard for more information, and check out www.goarmy.com for more info on the Reserves and Active duty. Remember, if you don't want to ship out to Afghanistan or wherever we'll be when you enlist, don't join at all.

7 to 8 minutes is good, since as a male you have to do it in 8:30. Still, keep running, that's the main thing with basic training. Yes, you go to BCT(boot camp), and AIT first. Idk about reserves, too much. Yes, they actually encourage you to go to school while in the reserves. Great opportunity to take advantage of. Usually it's about 4500 bucks a year towards your college education, so really just go to a community college and it'll be free ,besides books. If you want to go to a state college or something like that(USC, Florida State, Miami U, Clemson, etc), then you may pay a bit, but for the most part it's paid for. Cool part is, too, is that they pay you an extra $350 a month if you are in college. Good luck, boss.
