If that old laptop still works, you could install Linux on it. It will run great even on older, loe end specs hardware. I recommend installing Linux Mint 9 Isadora. Either use the main Gnome desktop version (best option), or if the laptop has very low specs (under 512MB RAM, low end old model single core processor under 1GHz, etc), just use a lighter version like LXDE or Xfce. Download links for Linux Mint 9 Isadora: http://www.linuxmint.com/release.php?id=13 Download all 3, the Gnome DVD (32bit), the LXDE and the Xfce 32bit. The main edition Gnome DVD (32bit) would be the best, try it first to see if that old laptop will support it and run it well. All versions are bootable Live CD, they will load the whole operating system and run it from your RAM, giving you the option to test before you decide which one to install. Even if you don't have a working DVD/CD drive you can still run them in Live CD mode and install from a Live USB stick (flash, thumb drive). Google on how to create a Linux Live USB. I recommend using either UNetbootin or Linux Live USB Creator (LiLi) http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ http://www.linuxliveusb.com/ http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/ One you start to use and understand Linux you'll like it so much that you won't ever wanna go back to Windows. I know I didn't.

Post a craigslist ad, or, donate it to any charity, family, etc. Make sure to erase or remove the hard drive (there are free bootable CD images you can use), and maybe remove the serial number sticker.
