Your best way to but and own gold for a small investor, which you are or you would not be here asking the question, is from a coin show in your area. Buy bullion coins, Maple Leaf, Krugerrand, Mexican Peso, or Chinese Panda. All are readily bought and sold in the small market. Before you buy, research the daily spot price, the fineness of the coin, and the "mark up" for each type. With gold near it's all time high in USD, the standard currency for traders, a 1 oz coin should trade about 4% over the spot price, with the smaller coins costing a higher % of there gold content. Peso come in 2, 2 1/2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 denominations. Maple Leaf have 1/4, 1/2, 1 oz sizes, as do the rand and Panda. Gold is about the cheapest in the US market, India and Japan are usually very expensive. The rest of the world is in between. The US coins are very expensive, the Kruggerrand and Maple Leaf are less so. Check the metals market and call your local coin shops for daily quotes for at least a week before buying, so you get an understanding of the market.
