Why was the Cadbury's Gorilla advert so successful?

  • Answer:

In my personal opinion... It catches you from the off, most ads nowadays are too full off "action", "excitement" and a LOT of information crammed into the allotted time frame then this comes on after all the commotion and the song really draws you in. You then look and see the gorilla and wait to see what his/her surroundings entails and this non natural environment appears which lead to even more curiosity. With the gorilla's eyes closed expressing an emotion you could start to think it was unhappy or the likes. Then the drum kit appears and you are still piqued as to what is happening and low and behold he/she starts drumming with the rhythm of the music and its oddity makes it amusing. There have been instances of Gorilla's playing bongos in the jungle but not drums and in a studio type environment and along with a popular song. I'm too tired to continue and this probably doesn't make much sense but I really enjoy this add and ever since the Hangover I can envision the Gorilla boxing to the song also.. gotta love Mike Tyson!!

Would YOU refuse to buy Cadbury's if a Gorilla wanted you to? One advert that failed spectacularly in China, was the Cola advert "Come alive with Pepsi!" It was later discovered that in Chinese, it translates as: "Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the dead!"

Sir Matthew Hopkins

It uses a famous, popular song. The notion of a gorilla playing the drums is a novelty, because the two aren't things that are usually related. Because of that, it's memorable. It's also humorous.
