Can police ask for insurance still? Registration CA?
-
Someone recently told me police can not ask for insurance anymore. The law changed in supreme court for privacy reasons. That is why you have to have proof of insurance in order to get registration and the dmv now. I also heard registration is supposed to be a one time fee...and the law got twisted and now we pay for higher registration costs yearly when it is written as a one time fee. As well as something about if the car is used for business you must have insurance/registration but if it is a private/personal car for transportation of your persons not goods for sale (on business) then you are exempt for the fee. Is this true?

Sound like someone is pulling your leg. Yes you must provide, insurance, registration and driver's license to any officer that asks. You must also provide the above information to anyone you crash into. If you forget your insurance card and are given a court summons this is how you can reduce the consequences.

In California, we cannot pull you over JUST TO SEE if you have insurance, but if we stop you for a violation, you are required to have proof of current insurnace and your current registration card in the car with you. 16028. No.Insurance company still reports that your insured to DMV and cops can still ask for your papers. Paying registration every years funds CHP.

Neither are true. No idea how any of such rumors started. Not an invasion of privacy since SCOTUS has found in all kinds of cases that driving is never a right.
