How do I update my PS3?

How do you fix the PS3 update loop?

  • My PS3 is stuck in an infinite update loop. No matter what I try (I've taken out the HDD while it updates, restarted it, tried a lot of things I found online), it won't stop the updates. If I turn it off, and turn it back on, it starts to update again, automatically. The problem is in the installation, not in the download. Before, I had a freezing problem (it wouldn't start or it would freeze while it starts; within minutes it'd be frozen. However, that problem stopped now, it works fine, except it won't update. I have the "fat" 40gb PS3. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! The things I tried online include taking out the HDD when it starts to update, restarted the PS3, let it restart itself (when it counts down from 60), formatted the HDD in both fat32 and NTFS and putting it back in the ps3 with a USB plugged in (with update data on there), it still gets an error while updating... Even when I reformatted the HDD on my PC and put the HDD back into the PS3, it didn't ask me to reformat the HDD at all. I might be getting a new one, not sure; if there is any method that has a high rate of success, please tell me.

You say you have tried many things you found online...what sort of things have you tried? *When you say you are getting a new one, do you mean HDD or PS3? I think you might need to purchase a new PS3, because from my understanding, if you can't solve that issue using the steps you tried, there is nothing else you can do. Even a new HDD won't solve the problem. It's an internal issue with the PS3. The hardware is malfunctioning. I suppose you could have a technician look at it and see if it just needs a new blu-ray drive, but if the drive needs to replaced it will cost at least $100. Your system is old, it was only a matter a matter of time before something like this happened. Even if it could be fixed it probably doesn't have much life left in it. You are smart if you buy a new one. I had do the same thing last December when my 80GB broke down for good. It's damn shame they didn't build them better.
