How to train a Labrador puppy on a walk?
-
Hi everyone. I have a 6 month old chocolate brown lab. At home I can train her using treats because she will focus on them but she has never paid attention to treats whenever we try to train her while getting the lead out or when we are out on a walk because shes too excited about whats going on. I can get her to sit by holding on to her but when I try to give her a treat for sitting if she picks it up she spits it back out again because she isn't interested in it. Most of the time she won't even notice the treat or ignores it. How can I train her with out using treats? The main problems are pulling, jumping up at other dogs to say hello and not coming back when called (actually she runs away) Please help :)

Answer:
Your puppy needs both socializing and training, so the best thing you can do is sign yourselves up for obedience classes. You'd have an instructor to teach you how to train and she'd get to work with distractions which is what all dogs need. Any dog can learn to listen at home, a trained dog can listen with lots of other things around. Your puppies at an age where she needs a lot of socializing and training.

I am a real dog handler true and blue. It sounds to me like you are giving her treats instead of attention. The dog on a walk I have always noticed likes to have attention to do well. You need to start walking her and leave the treats at home. Take her out in your yard and walk her for a few minutes and train her outside on the leash. Lots of dog training comes from the home work. Try the whole affection thing instead of some unhealthy treats. The biggest key factor in training them is to take the time to get them to where you want them. The average dog in my opinion takes 3 to 4 years to really get them down pat. The Lab is a highly energetic dog that takes plenty of time to train. Ranked the 7th smartest dog in the world it wouldn't seen that way. But due to the fact of their energy and their strong headed ways in the great outdoors they are.

Let her lead a little bit and get farmiliar with the area shes in. Once thats done, the next time you lead and be very firm. If she starts to bark and tug, pull back and say a very firm, "No, No!". This kind of behavior will continue for a while. Possibly even until she matures.

She's excited XO

Labrador's tend to be excitable. I have one myself and while she is mostly very good, there are still moments after four years where she gets excited and difficult to control. I used to give treats too in the beginning and that helped with the heeling part, but not when she saw people or other dogs. What I have to do with my dog when we see another dog is walk the opposite direction or walk across the street and make her sit at a distance. I reward with praise more often than treats nowadays. If you have the opportunity to work with someone else who has a dog, you can work together to desensitize your dog to other dogs. Go to a park when there are not many people around. Have your friend and their dog stay at a distance. If your dog ignores them, reward her. Have your friend walk closer and find the threshold where your dog starts getting excited and uncontrollable. Then have your friend stay just outside of that threshold and the two of you walk back and forth or cross each other's paths. Over time, it could be weeks or months with a Labrador, your friend can get closer and closer without your dog getting excited. Be sure that you are ignoring your friend and their dog during the whole training session. If you pay attention to your friend and the other dog, your dog might too. If you have more than one friend and other dogs that can help, that would be better. Otherwise your dog might just get used to that dog but not other dogs. You can even practice this training at a park where there are other people and dogs, but not necessarily have those other people working with you. Just find your dog's threshold and stay at a distance from other people and slowly work your way to being able to walk closer to people and other dogs. The sooner you start with your puppy, the better. I made the mistake of using a choke collar on my Labrador and it didn't teach her not to get excited. I used the Halti and Gentle Leader too but that didn't teach her to ignore other dogs either. I also used a retractable lead and later learned that these types of leashes are not a good idea for training at all.

Training your dog to a leash takes patience and consistency. So first, throw away that 20' retractable shoe string. You need a six foot nylon leash, for training. A choke collar or harness is not necessary. When you start training a dog to the leash, choke up on the leash. Give him just enough leash to comfortably walk beside you. When he starts pulling or jumping, stop. Plant your feet in a wide stance and remain still. If he knows the "sit" command, tell him to sit. Put your hand on his butt and make him sit. Do not take a step forward again until he calms down and relaxes. rinse and repeat. Do this everytime you go for a walk. After a few walks, he will get the idea. As for meeting other dogs, you are the alpha in the pack. You meet the new dog first. You lead by example. Keep your dog on your left side, and greet the new dog with your right hand. Then allow your dog to meet the new dog. Keep the leash short. This is not play time, this is walk time. A short visit with a new dog is fine, but clowning around should not be tolerated. That is how I train all of my dogs. Here's some more ideas: http://dogs.about.com/od/dogtraining/a/loose_leash_training.htm
