Can i use my sim card with an iphone 3g?

Can you use a normal sim card in an IPhone 3G and 3GS?

  • my mums best friends husband is giving me his iPhone 3G. At the moment i am using my old phone which the the webslider (which is ****) I don't know if this Iphone is a 3G or 3GS but anyways, he hasn't used it that much at all and it looks brand new and he was wondering if i want it for only $100 dollars and of course i would say yes. But the only thing i was thinking was do i have to change my sim card to a smaller one that fits into the Iphone or does it take a normal sim card. Because i don't wanna change plans and go onto a cap. I'm on Optus 'boost' pre paid atm and i'm quite happy with my pre paid plan. So can someone please let me know if i can just use my normal sim card into this phone. Thank you :)

I have a 3gs and it uses a standard sized sim card. The iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s both use microsims, but the 3g and 3gs both use standard sized sims. You will not need to cut your sim card to use it in your new iPhone, just pop in the sim card and away you go. One thing to consider is this: is the iPhone unlocked, or on the same network as your current phone? If it is, you are good to go. If it is locked to any other network, you will need to get it unlocked to be able to use it. A local phone unlocking store could do it for a fee, or the current owner could request that his network unlock it for him. The network may do it free of charge, but your friend would have to discuss that with the network.

The iPhone 3G and 3GS both use standard size sim cards, so you should be fine. Only the iPhone 4 and above use the micro-sim that is smaller.

A normal sim card is too big. You can get cutters though which apparently are safe to use. Practise on some free ones first!
