How can I get the courage to write song lyrics? How do other people do it?
-
I have never written a song. I've sort of written one for a music class, but I stole half the lyrics from another song, so it kinda sucks :s How do you write song lyrics? I've figured out, that there's two elements as to why I can't write them. Firstly, i've tried. Everything I write ends up sounding corny and immature. I'm only 15, so I guess they'll all be immature for now. But my friends and band mates have been writing songs since they were 12 or thirteen, and they all sound so... amazing *.* The songs i've attempted to write, they're all about stupid immature things. Fights with siblings, my angry mother, confusion and jealousy towards other girls and songs about guys I've liked. I know, it's stupid. I just don't feel like i've experienced enough to write songs. I haven't had my heart broken, I haven't had a massive fight with a friend or family member, I haven't witnessed anything life-changing. My life experiences are too boring to write a song about I feel like I need to increase my vocabulary or something. I just can't find the words I want to write. Secondly, I have trouble bringing up my emotions onto paper or Speech. I seriously could not bare the thought of other people reading my lyrics, partly because of embarrassment of how immature and badly written they are, and partly because those people are reading my thoughts from deep inside my head and heart. I can barely write them down on paper, let alone show other people. How do people do it? How do they write these amazing lyrics so easily? How do they get the courage to bring up these old demons from their past, their most secretive thoughts and show them off to the world? One of my favorite lyricist, Billie Joe Armstrong... He just write such amazing lyrics. How does he get the courage to tell everyone about a girl he likes to his whole high school, where he performed songs? And Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance. How did he find the strength to write Headfirst For Halos, a song about his depression, suicidal thoughts and the antidepressants? How do they do it? How do my friends do it? I can't write song lyrics. But since I'm in a band, I feel like it's my duty to contribute in more then just instrumentals.

Answer:
First off; props to being a Green Day and My Chem fan!c: Second; I've tried writing lyrics and can't seem actually make a asong, they end up as short stories. Enough of me rambling; It may sound immature and corny to you, but it may sound amazing to someone else. Have someone read one of your songs and see what they think. Some people aren't for writing lyrics and some are. I'm not trying to mean (honestly, I'm trying to be nice) Gather up like, your emotions and make a song out of that. Heartbreak, fights, even happiness Or possibly make a song where the lyrics are so insane its like, classifed as hardcore (if that makes any sense xD) Even the most amazing song-writers have hard times trying to write a song, hell even an album. I wish you good luck :)

Like nike says, just do it. I promise you'll do fine. It can even be for yourself. What i do is when i feel the impulse or i'm angry, i wanna vent, anything like that i pick up a pen and start writing or freestyling. It doesn't have to rhyme or even sound good at first. Just do it and let it come naturally don't try to force it. :D

The only way to do it is it do it. You can't ask anyone how to write, it has to come from your heart. I have a band and I am slowly writing songs for us to preform. It's hard and it's crazy. But all you have to do is relax and let your gut tell you what's next. I can't tell you how to do because it wouldn't be fair to an artist if I gave the answer. The only answer I can try to teach you is this: Writing is soul, and soul is writing. Get a pen and paper and write down your feelings, your thoughts. Be in the moment and hear you own words spun to a tune. Nothing is better then slamming down a sick line and know that it's your work and it's your thing. As for life experiences you don't need those to write an amazing song. All you need is to know you can do it. If you have anymore questions I will be glad to talk more in depth with you on this subject.

Hi Deadbeat! First off, don't be so hard on yourself!! Here's what happened to me ( I'm telling you this to show you age - either way - does not matter ) . From a young age I wrote poetry, especially when I was a soldier. In later years at Uni, I did some " stand up mic " spots for poets. It was then I began writing lyrics ( 1996 ) . Deadbeat, its like this maybe you cannot write, maybe you can? Write about what you know? Going to school, any girls you may like, people you dislike? From those examples you'll be able to write lyrics. Or, you could use your imagination? You're on a date with the most beautiful girl in town, you're out with her because she, asked you out. The best songs are about everyday people, in everyday situations. At first your lyrics may not be so good, don't worry. Continue writing, as you write more and more, you'll see a marked improvement in your writing. Both in its content and; in its style. You have to work very hard, never give up and, work hard again. Bruce Springsteen writes about what he knows. Tim McGraw writes about what he knows. You may be a young man but, there's much that you know. Put your thinking cap on and; get to work!! Good luck!!
