How long does it take to write a screenplay?

Is it easier to write a book or a screenplay?

  • Answer:

Neither. I think it depends on the writer. I have tried writing a book once before and I notice its much easier to write a play than a novel. Writers in general go through the challenges that come with writing like "Writer's block". However, both are two different areas that rely on two different things. Screenplays rely heavily on dialogue and imagery to carry a story, but with writing a book its a bit more complex. The dialogue, how the words flow, your characters etc. You have to depend heavily on your words to set the scenery and the characters, but screenplay is just a different a process. I am not trying to condescend the other or say one is easier than the other, because they are both VERY difficult. As I stated earlier it depends on the writer and both are equally competitive.

ROAR

I've written both and I'll tell you that, for me, writing a script is easier. Screenplays should average about 120 pages, and one page represents one filmed minute. However novels require MUCH more detail, and many more words to tell the same story. I might be biased because I prefer to write screenplays and I hate writing detail, but I personally think the people who think it's easier to write a book are kidding themselves, (like my old screenplay teacher.)

Boon

Totally depends. I am 14 and have written DOZENS of scripts. I still can't sit down and write 3 pages of a novel. It totally depends on you.

I've always wanted to write a screen play but always fear that I am too young (15). I say go for the screenplay it may be harder but I'll definitely buy that screenplay. The book is easier to write but in a way harder to sell. Go for the gold! M
