The school was just a customer of your employer, they have nothing to do with this. The company that hired you would be the ones responsible. First, was the job legit? Did you fill out a W-4 and provide all of your documentation? If not, it is harder to claim you actually worked there; definitely not impossible, just harder. If the job was legit, go to your state's dapartment of labor; this is against the law.
No laws if you signed a contract agreeing to work for free. Talk to the company manager. I knew someone who applied to a store for work, got turned down but showed up for work anyway thinking it would impress. She worked for an entire four days before being called in by HR on the fifth day and asked "Who are you?" She was immediately escorted off the premises, but they did give her a $50 gift card
