How To Stop Dog's Itching?

How can stop my dog from itching/scratching?

  • i have an almost 2 year old male minitaure shnauzer (1 year and 10 months). He has been scratching alot lately and i can't figure out what is causing him to do that. i want to do an allergy test but they cost so much and i don't want my parents to spend that much money. Im giving him benadryl daily and waiting a week to see if it stops but meanwhile im trying to find other ways to stop it. Can giving an oatmeal bath help? what are some things i can do to help my dog? I've taken him to the groom last week and have him get bathed and have 1 inch of his hair get cut off (because he was getting too hairy) and i thought that might have been the problem. He;s starting to scratch some of his hair out in the chest area. please help

if he is not on flea and tick prevention he could be itching because of that. you dont need to jump into an allergy test go to your vet and they could probably figure it out. and if you do have to eventually do the test its worth the money so you can figure out how to help them. oatmeal shampoo for dogs can help them sometimes but only bath him twice a week or his skin with get really dried out. good luck

it's a bad idea to give benadryl without knowing what the problem is. give him a bath with flea & tick shampoo, see if that helps.

Honestly, the best and safest thing you can do for your dog is take him to the vet. He may have a problem with fleas or some other parasite that you want to get taken care of immediately. And giving him benadryl on a hunch is not a good idea, especially regularly. There's also a possibility that he had a bad reaction to a shampoo or other product from the groomer's, or that bathing too frequently has dried out or otherwise irritated his skin. So maybe back off for a couple of days to see what happens. Oatmeal baths are supposed to be soothing, but I still strongly recommend talking to a vet first. It's a pain, but sometimes pets can be expensive. They're worth it, though.
