The speed of processor is measure by Gigahertz(GHZ) But intel rank it's chip in a way that the higher the last 3 digit, the better it is compare to other processor. By looking at two intel processor for eg CHIP(1) i7-2649M(2.3GHZ)(4M CACHE) CHIP(2) i7-2640M(2.8GHZ)(4M CACHE) Chip(1) is a better chip according to intel cause of the numbering 649M is higher then 640M But the problem is this, according to what i know,Chip(1) Suppose to be a slower chip compare to Chip(2) because it is only (2.3GHZ), while CHIP(2) is (2.8GHZ. Then why is it that intel will rank that it is a faster and better chip comapre to Chip(2)? Is GHZ the only thing that determine how fast a processor is? That is to say the higher the GHZ the faster it will be? And also what other factor or specifications that i must look look out that will contribute to a faster processor other than looking out for the GHZ if there is any?

Actually a frequency of processor does not determine it's power it just determines the particular frequency it's tune you must note that with higher frequency it's power may increase but it also increases the current consumption increasing processor heat .but frequency alone should not be taken we must find out how much gigaflops it deliver at a particular frequency . For a efficient processor it should be able to provide large amount of gigaflops in the least frequency in your above case chip1 can be efficient than chip 2 so it is more power ful .for another example try googling a5 vs tegra 2 gpu you will understand

Not necessary, when only the last digit is different, the odd number (other than "0") is just a version of the main model (ending in a "0"). Also not necessary. The GHz clock speed is only one aspect. Other things like number of cores and threads, newer technology and thinner layers (eg 45nm and 32nm), etc are sometimes much more important in determining which processor is better. The GHz clock speed only decides inside the same class and model, like the case above.

you checked the: 1. hardware reviews of the chip in anandtech, linus tech tips, and otther reviews before making a decision 2. check the core count. I'd go with quad core over a dual core. learn the prefixes if you don't know what i mean 3. the cpu architecture. maybe, the one with lower speed has higher bus bandwidth and faster cache access speeds. 4. RESEARCH before making a decision which of anything. 5. the people's satisfactory over a product. Good day.
