How do I become a Paralegal in California?
-
I have done some research and there are a lot of online paralegal schools. I'm just curious as to what school would be the best one to go to. My local community college has a Paralegal Studies program to get your Associates Degree in 2 years and it is approved by the ABA. Are online schools approved by the ABA as well? What do you think my best option would be?

Answer:
Starve..........worthless profession............law sucks............Private schools for profit are rip offs..........go into the health field and never want for work............law school grads cannot get jobs so they drop down to para legal just to pay the bills............a waste of time and money.......

You don't need an ABA approved paralegal certificate or degree in California, Mary - it just has to be an accredited school or ABA approved. Take a look at http://www.paralegaltrainingschools.com/%E2%80%A6 for more information about approved / accredited schools in California. The above pertains only to educational requirements for paralegals in California - potential employers may expect more, and the only way to know for certain is to talk to them. For example, do they require a Bachelors degree from an American Bar Association approved institute, or will an eight month paralegal certificate obtained from an accredited online school suffice? Are there any areas of specialization that are especially marketable in your area - immigration, bankruptcy, or environmental law (or some other)? And so on. Once you know what will make you marketable, you're in position to enroll in a program - and you've already begun to network for a job. Regarding the desirability of becoming a paralegal, do a search for 'CareerCast' and 'paralegal'. The study they did rated it as #1 among underrated careers, and indicated the unemployment rate was only 4.6% in 2010 - or about half that of the nation. Good luck with it.
