Some of the big names like ezinearticles require you to submit original works, they use a copyscape like search for duplicate content, of course their being a distribution site, there's no problem with putting a copy on your site after is is listed on the article site. Some submit their best version to a high ranking, then use a 'spinning' utility to make computer scrambled versions that look original to automated checkers and submit these less readable versions to lesser directories. The quality of these derived versions ma have to pass editorial reviews, so they can't be the almost unreadable junk some use on seo blog farms.
